Information for students

You are probably looking at this web page if you have been told you might be coming to this school. The information here is for you to find out about the school, and we hope you would like to come and have a look round to find out more.

We aim to  help you to feel confident that you can learn and to make sure that your individual needs are met. We know that almost everything can be learned, if you try hard and put in the right amount of effort. This is called a Growth Mindset. It's one of our core values and practices at King Edwin.

Our School

King Edwin school is a small school with very small classes. Each group has a personal tutor and a support staff member. Our staff work hard to get to know you well as we’d really like you to enjoy school.

We spend a lot of time on outdoor activities such as surfing, hiking and visiting interesting cultural places.

We do a lot of in-school and out of school activity to help our students to learn about team work and increase their self confidence. And have fun!

Lessons

Our lessons are short, we find it can help our students concentrate. Each lesson is 45 minutes long.

Most days we have Maths, English and Science.

Every week we also have lessons on other subjects such as Art and Creative Skills, Personal and Social Development, Humanities, Cooking, and PE.

Some students also have options such as vocational courses in beauty, construction and more.

Outdoor learning (including Duke of Edinburgh)

Every week we take part in learning outdoors. This might be a half day or full day, and can be anything from exploring a college, a town, taking part in a beach clean, visiting a museum, or even taking hikes.

Responsibility (a great way to show you have earned a reward!)

Each week, we reward all of our students that have completed their lessons and made progress with their targets. This reward is known as achieving 'responsibility'. Responsibility is different every week but is only for the students who have earned it. Some weeks students have gone to see a film, gone go-karting, visited Pizza Hut or other restaurants or gone bowling. Every week is different. It's a fantastic end to the week!

Every week we take part in social learning outdoors.  Social learning is learning with others, and helping each other to improve in areas we need to develop and improve. Social learning happens in school and during our Duke of Edinburgh Day. On Duke of Edinburgh day (Wednesday) every week we take part in an outing or trip. Trips take place to different places, and you will learn about yourself and what you are capable of, you will learn how to get along with each other, and you will learn how to cope when things are tough and find out about local history and culture! You will also have a chance to practise the skills you have been developing during the week.
